Underground stations in Berlin

Prestigious, effectively illuminated and with a distinctive identity – the “Rote Rathaus”, “Museumsinsel” and “Unter den Linden” underground stations in Berlin

Three new underground stations complete the U5 underground line, closing the gap between Alexanderplatz and Brandenburger Tor – a prestige project for the German capital. The stations feature lighting with customised downlights from WE-EF.

The Rote Rathaus underground station at the seat of Berlin’s national Government celebrates the importance of this place for the city – with clear, spacious and prestigious architecture. The lighting solution is simple and elegant: DOC200 recessed luminaires line up like a string of pearls, with a precise installation setting the luminaire back a few centimetres into the ceiling surface. The reflection from the white floors and ceilings produces the desired, pure lighting effect – with a high level of visual comfort for the users.

Bright ultramarine blue and several thousand brilliant points of light make the vaults of the Museumsinsel underground station shine like a starry sky. A fascinating eye-catcher – but, of course, not sufficient to provide safe and pleasant platform lighting in compliance with standards. This is why a functional lighting component in the form of DOC200 downlights positioned along the edge of the platform was added to the decorative elements. Despite their asymmetrical position in the vault, the recessed housing and a special fitting ring enable vertical installation in the ceiling structure that is made of steel and plasterboard.

Modified DOC200 recessed luminaires contribute to the prestigious look of the Unter den Linden underground station. They feature a round acrylic glass cover as a characteristic detail. The luminaire panels above the escalator posed very special challenges. As ladders or work platforms cannot be used there, WE-EF DAC200 surface-mounted luminaires – also fitted with acrylic covers – were mounted on luminaire lifts in the installation housings. The identical appearance and lighting technology of both types of luminaires gives the lighting a uniform look.
