Step by Step Process for Gobo Projections

Design Concept

Design

Design visual effects and images

Define the desired effects, such as framing, highlighting features, or projecting artwork or logos. Collaborate with graphic and lighting designers to bring the vision to life.

Sizing

Site Planning

Assess surroundings, take precise measurements, and identify projector angles (ideally 0–30°). Ensure the aperture covers the area, factoring in visibility and fixing positions for optimal results.

Calculate

Lighting Simulation

Use tools like Dialux or Relux to calculate projector placement, opening angles, and setback distances for precise illumination.

Set Up

Luminaire Installation

The WE-EF Gobo specialist will install the projector, adjust orientation and inclination, set the Gobo, fine-tune the focus and zoom, measure with a laser meter and capture high-resolution photos of the projection.

Bringing the famous Trees of Cours Mirabau to live at Night

Establishing the identity of the new fast bus line as well as the territory it crosses (7 km).

Redesigning the lighting of the Rotunda square and its monumental fountain in the Aix-en-Provence City Center

The Lighting Brief

The Aixpress Bus à Haut Niveau de Service (BHNS) project in Aix-en-Provence sought to create a distinctive identity along a 7 km transit corridor while reimagining key public spaces. Central to the initiative was the redesign of the Square de la Rotonde’s lighting, highlighting the monumental fountain at the terminus of the iconic Cours Mirabeau. The vision was to evoke a sense of connection between the urban square and the natural beauty of the tree-lined avenue.

WE-EF Solution

WE-EF gobo projectors were employed to craft a unique lighting effect, simulating the dappled light of sunbeams filtering through the branches of trees. This design pays homage to the renowned plane trees of the Cours Mirabeau, extending their ambiance into the square and creating a harmonious blend of nature and urbanity. The gobo projectors’ precision allowed for dynamic, textured light patterns that added depth and character to the space, transforming it into an inviting and poetic destination after dark.

Products

WE-EF FLC200 GOBO LED luminaires were selected for their ability to project intricate light patterns with precision and durability. Designed to mimic sunlight filtering through trees, they perfectly evoke the ambiance of the Cours Mirabeau. Energy-efficient and weather-resistant, the FLC200 luminaires deliver sustainable, low-maintenance solutions while enhancing the square’s unique identity.

Steel Gobo

The term "Gobo", short for "goes before optics", refers to a metal plate with a laser-cut pattern. Placed in front of a projector, it casts the pattern as a light image. As technology has advanced, gobos can also be made from glass plates with various tints and colours.

Framing and cropping
Image

Tailored Lighting

Framing is a specific lighting technique used to isolate the shape of an object or architectural details to be highlighted. This technique is valuable for avoiding light pollution by enabling targeted illumination. There are two types of framing: framing with a knife accessory for basic shapes, and framing using Gobo cropping for complex shapes.

Anamorphosis
Image

Unlocking the Magic

Anamorphosis is a distorted projection that requires the viewer to occupy a specific vantage point, use special devices, or both, to view a recognisable image. It is used in painting, photography, sculpture, installation, toys, film special effects, and also in Gobo projections. The image must be calibrated and sized to be relevant from the correct point of view or calculated to correct the keystone effect when the projector's position is angled.

Gobo lens technology

FLC Gobo Projectors

The WE-EF profile projectors with white LEDs, tunable white, or colour-changing technology are ideal for various applications – from subtly lighting buildings with warm to cool white light to dramatically illuminating facades with colored light. These luminaires are suitable for outdoor use and effective lighting in transitional or indoor spaces like atriums, halls, and foyers.
