Mawson Lakes Salisbury 

Outdoor spaces require lighting that helps people feel safe while respecting the natural environment. In Mawson Lakes, a suburb north of Adelaide, the new lighting installation along the footpath, cycling route and jogging trail surrounding the artificial lake demonstrates how this balance can be achieved. The project follows WE-EF’s Night Sensitive Lighting approach, ensuring that light is directed precisely where it is needed while minimising impact on water surfaces, wildlife habitats and the night sky.  

Led by Michael Pavlovich, responsible for energy, lighting and infrastructure within the local authority, the project team defined clear objectives for the new lighting scheme. The existing installation no longer met current requirements. The new solution needed to enhance safety, visual comfort and the overall user experience while simultaneously reducing light pollution, energy consumption and maintenance requirements. Particular attention was given to protecting the lake, the bridge crossing the water and adjacent habitats for local flora and fauna.  

Together with Buckford Illumination Group South Australia, lighting designer Peter Buckley developed a tailored solution using WE-EF VFL520 post-top luminaires. Many of the existing poles could be retained, reducing both project complexity and environmental impact. A key feature of the project is the use of PC Amber LED technology, delivering an exceptionally warm amber light with minimal blue content to reduce disruption to wildlife. At the same time, the PC Amber LED  maintains sufficient colour rendering for comfortable human vision. 

WE-EF’s precision optics play a crucial role in achieving the project goals. The luminaires utilise the specialised [P65] pathway distribution, certified by the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance (ADSA), ensuring light is accurately directed onto the pathway. A DALI (NEMA) control system digitally connects the luminaires and enables adaptive dimming scenarios, further improving energy efficiency while protecting the surrounding environment.   The result is a lighting solution that benefits both people and nature: warm, uniform illumination that enhances safety, orientation and comfort, while reducing energy consumption, minimising light pollution, supporting Dark Sky principles and helping to protect local biodiversity. Mawson Lakes demonstrates how high-quality lighting can create long-term value through precision engineering, responsible design and a commitment to both people and planet.
