An airport terminal with an indoor park and illuminated gardens

Since April 2019, Singapore’s highly popular and lushly planted Changi Airport has offered another attraction: the newly built “Jewel” by Safdie Architects is one of a kind among airports. In the 135,700 m² structure, which connects Terminals 1, 2, and 3, not only transit passengers can relax and shop — the leisure complex is also open to the public, welcoming both tourists and locals.

Beneath a glass dome spanning more than 200 meters at its widest point, five above-ground and five underground levels rise and fall. At the center of the dome, a massive 40-meter waterfall cascades from a funnel deep into the heart of the building. Surrounding this spectacular centerpiece is the Forest Valley — a terraced forest featuring over 2,000 trees and palms, along with 60,000 shrubs. Winding paths and staircases weave through the Valley, connecting quiet zones with meeting spots, shops, and restaurants.

The lighting concept developed by Lighting Planners Associates (LPA) was carefully tailored to the site’s diverse uses and creates an atmospheric illumination throughout the space. To highlight the exotic plant life and ensure good visibility and safety for visitors strolling through the park, a total of 66 poles were equipped with WE-EF FLC121 and FLC141 projectors. Some of these luminaires are fitted with RGBW LEDs, enabling vibrant and dynamic color lighting effects. Given the park’s terraced layout with 360° viewpoints at varying elevations, effective glare control was essential. Almost all projectors are therefore equipped with glare shields. Pathways in the Topiary Walk and Petal Garden—two themed gardens located in the Canopy Park on the top floor directly beneath the glass roof—are lined with KTY200 bollard luminaires, providing precise, glare-free ground lighting. STL134 recessed wall luminaires further enhance safety by illuminating the stairways.
