Funded through local, state, and federal grants, the project prioritises community and sustainability at every level. Its architectural design blends seamlessly into the coastal landscape, bridging the beach and the city with sensitivity and purpose. Recognised with a six-star Green Star certification, the development sets a benchmark for environmentally friendly construction and sustainable urban design.

The proximity to the ocean and the architectural design demanded a thoughtful selection of luminaires, balancing durability with high-quality light performance. One key challenge was meeting the high illuminance requirements for the pool while ensuring the lighting could be dimmed to minimise its impact on nearby residences. A coordinated 3000 K colour temperature was chosen to enhance the natural appearance of timber elements, seamlessly integrating with the overall design. Circular and flexible luminaires were utilised to maintain harmony with the architectural forms, complemented by a comprehensive lighting control system to optimise functionality and energy efficiency.

The lighting solution for Scarborough Beach Pool was designed to meet the unique challenges of a coastal environment while enhancing the functionality and aesthetic appeal of the space. The luminaires were carefully selected for their ability to provide precise illumination, ensuring safety and comfort in all areas, from pathways to the pool itself. A coordinated warm light color improved the visual integration with the architectural design, highlighting natural materials and forms. Integrated control systems allowed for energy-saving features such as daylight harvesting and motion detection, optimizing efficiency and sustainability throughout the facility.

“A place defined by dynamic, cultural and climatic experiences. A place immersed within a landscape, mediating between rugged coast and manicured lawns and expressing life, contained by the architecture.”

A modified WE-EF RFS500 met the project’s need for a shallow, surface-mounted circular canopy luminaire. Additional products included QSI254 bollards for pathway marking, RFL530-SE pole-mounted area lights, DOR130 recessed downlights, SLS410 dual-output wall luminaires for façade lighting, and FLD131 projectors for the lift lobby.

Pool lighting
Image 1

Determining the minimum mounting height of luminaires is crucial, as it affects the angle at which light reaches the pool. Mounting height and tilt angle are generally the key contributing factors; however, in some cases, restricted ceiling height necessitates the use of uplighting rather than downlighting.

Restaurants and shops
Image

Thoughtful lighting transforms outdoor areas and cafés in aquatic centres into inviting spaces for relaxation and socialising. A blend of warm ambient and accent lighting enhances comfort while defining seating areas and pathways. Gobo projectors on façades add dynamic, scene-setting effects, creating unique visual experiences that can adapt to different events or themes—making the space both functional and visually engaging.

Car parks and pathways

Controlled optics prevent glare and light spill, ensuring surrounding properties remain unaffected. Variable pole heights for car parks and pathways balance cost efficiency with optimal spacing, while careful shielding and precision optics direct light exactly where it is needed.
