Case Study: Caulfield to Dandenong Line

Image 1

The $1.6 billion project exemplifies WE-EF’s expertise in rail lighting:

Five new stations and 17 km of pathways are illuminated with hybrid LED optics that minimise light spill. The design enhances community spaces, encouraging activity and blending seamlessly into the urban environment.

The Lighting Brief:

Provide an easy-to-maintain lighting solution that meets the energy efficiency requirements of Green Star and the Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia (ISCA).

The main goal of the crossing removal is to create community spaces accessible to all citizens and to establish new connections between neighbourhoods. The lighting should therefore be designed to combine safety with the emotional qualities of the urban space.

WE-EF Solution

To meet the lighting requirements for low light spill levels WE-EF developed a special 'hybrid' LED optics for maximum safety and protecting urban wildlife and residents at the same time.

The level crossing removal project in Victoria for the Caulfield to Dandenong line unlocked new space for public realm (11 MCGs worth of open space). 17 km of new pedestrian and cyclist paths were incorporated in the Caulfield to Dandenong project.

"Living locally, I’ve noticed many couples out taking their dogs for walks and kids playing Table Tennis on the new public table tennis tables – all under our lighting. What a great project this has been for the local area, bringing the community together."

WE-EF Toolbox for Railway Applications

WE-EF offers a full suite of lighting solutions tailored to train stations and light rail infrastructure:

Platform lighting

Guide passengers with vertical lighting and ensure safety through bright general lighting.

Reliable 24/7 illumination with minimum lux levels that comply with rail operator standards, ensuring passenger safety and comfort.

Pathways and public spaces

Creating a welcoming and efficient ambience

Ambient lighting is key for ensuring safety and comfort on the ground floor, which should be evenly lit and completely glare-free. A balanced mix of horizontal and vertical illumination establishes a strong base, while well-placed accent lighting guides movement and adds an emotional touch to the space.

Energy-efficient & smart lighting controls

Energy efficiency with Eco Step Dim®

Eco Step Dim® is the only solution with direction sensing, enabling on-demand dimming both up and down. This optimizes light levels and saves electricity during low traffic periods. As a versatile accessory for any DALI-capable luminaire, it brings precise, responsive control to enhance sophisticated projects.

Viaduct lighting

Making use of existing infrastructure

Lighting viaducts requires careful consideration of safety and compliance. Mounting luminaires underneath the railway with electrical isolation prevents earthing and bonding issues caused by high vibrations. Custom-mounted solutions ensure uniform illumination below, meeting regional regulations and enhancing safety – without the need for additional light poles.

Safe, targeted lighting without unwanted spill

Controlled optics prevent glare and light spill, ensuring surrounding properties remain unaffected. Variable pole heights for Car Parks and Pathways balance cost efficiency and optimal spacing, while careful shielding and precision optics direct light exactly where it is needed.
