Case Study: Morpeth Bridge

Image 1

Illuminating heritage for a community celebration

To commemorate Morpeth’s bicentenary in November 2021, the heritage-listed timber truss bridge was illuminated in a project designed as a symbolic gift to the town. Honouring the bridge’s historic significance, the lighting design was carefully developed to ensure full compliance with heritage guidelines.

The Lighting Brief

The challenge was to illuminate the bridge’s unique architectural features, including its riveted steel structure, piers, abutments, and deck, while preserving its heritage integrity. Different lighting scenes were required to highlight specific areas of the bridge, creating a balanced and captivating visual impact. Custom brackets and cabling systems were engineered to avoid penetrating the timber structure.

WE-EF Solution

The dynamic lighting scenes transformed the Morpeth Bridge into a vibrant landmark, with different areas illuminated to enhance both architectural detail and community connection. The programmable lighting allows the bridge to celebrate events such as Anzac Day, Christmas, and International Women’s Day, ensuring its role as a cultural focal point while respecting its historic significance.

“In my 35 years+ of lighting, this has to be one of the nicest projects I’ve ever worked on, because of the brilliant teamwork!”

Gavin Macrae, Stramac Lighting

Products

WE-EF provided 48 FLC220-CC luminaires, carefully programmed to create lighting scenes tailored to each section of the bridge. These scenes painted the riveted steel structure with dynamic colour variations while providing functional yet subtle illumination for piers, abutments, and the deck. Custom mounting solutions ensured seamless integration without compromising the heritage structure.

Narrow and very narrow beam projectors

I-beams, girders, and arches require narrow-beam projectors for precise highlighting. Cables and wires can be challenging to illuminate, but precision optics ensure even thin elements stand out subtly.

Lighting decks

Concealed linear luminaires, grazing projectors

Lighting the underside of the deck creates a floating effect. Concealed luminaires provide indirect illumination, while grazing optics highlight architectural lines. Proper placement prevents glare and enhances reflections in urban or waterfront settings.

Lighting piles, piers and abutments

Wall washers and narrow-beam optics

Flat surfaces like stone or concrete abutments benefit from wall washing with projectors or inground luminaires. Tall cylindrical piers are best highlighted with narrow or very narrow beams to emphasise height while avoiding light spill. Surface texture and ambient lighting guide optic selection for uniform illumination.

Minimising light spill

IOS® LED optics

Bridges require precise lighting to avoid glare affecting traffic and wildlife. WE-EF’s IOS® system ensures full cut-off (ULOR = 0%), meaning no upward light output, minimising light pollution while precisely directing downward light. Optimised shielding and accessories ensure targeted, efficient illumination without unwanted spill.

5CE Corrosion Protection

WE-EF’s 5CE Superior Corrosion Protection system ensures long-lasting durability for exterior luminaires through a multi-layered approach. 1: Architectural grade powdercoat 2: 'Intercoat' bonding primer 3: Conversion coating 4: Etched surface (5CE+ only) 5: Metal substrate

Dynamic lighting for landmarks

Tunable white lighting dynamically adjusts colour temperatures to enhance bridge aesthetics and functionality. Smooth transitions between warm and cool white light improve visibility, highlight structure, and adapt to different times of day or events.
