BICYCLE PATH AND FOOTPATH LIGHTING WITH RFL530-SE LED STREET AND AREA LIGHTING LUMINAIRES IN OY MITTELBERG

The origins of the German Alpine road date back to 1927 with the birth of the idea to connect the transverse valleys of the Alps between Lake Constance and Lake Königsee with a road along the Bavarian Alps. Ever since then, 450 winding kilometres have led through an impressive panoramic landscape as well as through pretty towns and villages. One of the towns is Oy Mittelberg in Oberallgäu.

Until 2016, the German Alpine road ran through the district of Oberzollhaus in Oy Mittelberg as federal road 309. However, after the opening of the Füssen border tunnel, a large amount of traffic moved to the largely parallel federal Motorway 7, which resulted in the federal road being downgraded to Bavarian State road 2520. For the municipality, which focuses on tourism, this not only had the advantage of less through traffic, it also meant restructuring the road including the construction of a new footpath and bicycle path along it. This has greatly enhanced safety for walkers and bicycle tourists as well as for other holidaymakers and residents.

The bicycle- and footpath is illuminated with RFL530-SE LED street and area lighting luminaires from WE-EF. “The municipality had already gained very positive experience with our LED luminaires elsewhere, which is why they were chosen for this project”, according to Christoph Heinzmann, who is responsible for WE-EF sales in Southern Bavaria. The variant with 24 LEDs is used here, i.e., power consumption of 24 watts at 350 mA, and a colour temperature of 3000 K.

The luminaires are fitted with [P65] lenses. Their asymmetric ‘side throw’ beam distribution directs the light efficiently and precisely to the ribbon-shaped path while preventing scattered light to the left and right of it. At the same time, large pole spacings are possible without pronounced dark areas between the luminaires. At crossroads and intersections the rectangular ‘forward throw’ beam [R65] lens is used. Its light distribution ensures that these areas are approached with particular attention while also providing excellent visual conditions.
