LIGHTS OVER THE SEA

The unique atmosphere of the pier jutting out 200 metres into the Baltic Sea in the German resort town of Heiligendamm invites all to stroll along it and stay for a while. The view towards land opens up into an architectural panorama of historical spas, guest houses and grand villas that once hosted a variety of banquets and events.

In the opposite direction, there are expansive vistas of sky and sea. The sunset in particular attracts both residents and holidaymakers alike to the pier, but even as twilight fades and dusk sets in, the pier with its scenic lighting continues to attract people. The pier’s inviting atmosphere is the result of a finely-tuned lighting concept entirely realised with WE-EF luminaires.

WE-EF developed a number of special solutions to meet the particular on-site requirements of the pier. The lighting effects of the pier are based on four lighting components. The new WE-EF VLR130 LED linear mounted luminaires were the first component selected for this project. Mounted on the rails of the pier via a customised, project-specific bracket, the luminaires feature an asymmetric light distribution that precisely accentuates the walkways of the pier. This walkway lighting is complemented by WE-EF LTM440 LED light columns, with lenses that generate linear light distribution in this particular application. The columns focus the lighting on the pier and prevent unnecessary stray light from reflecting off the surface of the water.

EFC120-RE luminaires, installed under the benches, provide an additional lighting accent for the pier. Normally installed as inground uplights, for this application a specially designed flange plate was developed to support the luminaire. Four unmodified FLD111 projectors are used to illuminate the ‘Heiligendamm’ sign at the end of the pier. This bright accent beckons seafaring guests to stop by.

The Heiligendamm pier project once again demonstrates WE-EF’s ability to adapt existing products to unique and specialised solutions.

The Heiligendamm pier and illumination looks exceptional and its lighting is extremely efficient. Retrofitting with LED technology was financially supported by the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state funding body. The aim of this part of the project was to achieve an energy saving of 60 per cent compared with the previous lighting solution.
