WE-EF ETR149 INGROUND LUMINAIRES USED AS LIGHT BAND

Berlin’s S-Bahn fleet comprises around 600 trains, which are serviced at five maintenance facilities. One of these facilities is located in Berlin-Marzahn. The site is home to a 25-track open-air storage siding, a brake-testing track and a repair hall with ten tracks. Constructed in the 1980s, the large repair workshop at the Marzahn maintenance facility was recently completely renovated. An interesting solution for the working light used during repairs to the underside of the train carriages was implemented as part of this work.

Unlike in many other train workshops, the tracks for working on the underside of the carriages are not laid over pits; instead they are raised up. For the lighting, this means that they cannot be installed on the sides of the pits walls; they must be integrated directly in the floor. Berlin Transport (BVG) had clear requirements for the illuminance: 500 lx should illuminate all points of the underside of the train carriage. To meet this specification, the original round inground uplights installed at regular distances were replaced with a light band. The light band is created from 1015 mm-long and 160 mm-wide WE-EF ETR149 luminaires. In contrast to the previous solution, they generate a very even illuminance distribution. Light/dark zones and strong contrasts are now a thing of the past. The solution is also significantly more efficient, because extremely high values do not have to be generated at a light point in order to achieve the minimum required illuminance in the sections between two luminaires. The ETR149 luminaires are sufficiently equipped with 39 watt T5 fluorescent lamps for this project. The lamps are situated in a high-purity aluminium reflector behind a diffuse lens made of safety glass. The large light emission surface prevents extreme luminance and, together with the diffuse lighting, minimises glare.

The ETR149 recessed luminaires installed here are fitted with an anti-slip coating (ASC) made of abrasion-proof ceramic. They are designed for maximum static loads of up to 5000 kg, and trains can travel over or be rolled over the luminaires at low speeds. IP67 protection, shock rating IK10+ and the tried-and-tested 5CE corrosion protection technology from WE-EF ensure a long service life even in the extreme day-to-day environment of the workshop.
