LIVELY CITY CENTRE CREATED WITH INNOVATIVE LIGHTING
After a substantial redesign, Landsberg am Lech’s main square, located in the centre of the historic Altstadt district, has a brand new look with some innovative features. One of these features is its lighting solution, which features WE-EF VFL530 LED street and area lighting luminaires, and RFS540 LED catenary (cable-supported) luminaires.
The main square now provides an attractive and inviting central meeting point in the city where everyone, both young and old, can come together. Apart from the imaginative lighting concept, another major feature is the new road layout, which previously split the square in two. A speed limit of 30 km/h for vehicles, newly-installed public transport stops as well as space for cyclists and pedestrians now allow the square to be shared by all.
In addition to the needs and wishes of residents, business owners and visitors to the square, requirements for the preservation of the surrounding historical buildings and monuments also had to be taken into account as the square is defined by its various historical facades. The lighting design therefore received particular attention, even during the project tender stage. The new sources of illumination in the main square not only provide excellent visibility and high standards of safety; they also create an ambiance as well as highlight the character and architecture of the square.
In finalising the comprehensive tender process, the city opted for VFL530 LED street and area lighting luminaires (for wall and post mounted applications) and RFS540 catenary luminaires (for streetlighing). The project’s lighting designers and engineers made a convincing argument for the WE-EF luminaires, based on the combination of the superior technical specifications and design of the luminaires that would integrate well with Landsberg’s urban environment.
Furthermore, LED luminaires provide clear cost benefits. The VFL530 LED luminaires are fitted with warm-white LEDs that have a 3000 K colour temperature; these provide the lighting for pedestrian paths and illuminate the frontages. The streetlighting is supplied by RFS540 LED 48 W luminaires on overhead cables, allowing most of the existing supports to be used. The RFS540 LED luminaires also feature warm-white LEDs and asymmetric ‘side throw’ distribution.
