Spa park in Bad Mergentheim: A place where people and nature flourish

The spa park in the health resort town of Bad Mergentheim is the ideal place to relax, take some exercise and enjoy cultural events – with a focus on sustainability and conserving nature. In addition, the new lighting system meets all the requirements of the spa’s management: energy-efficient CFT540 pole luminaires from WE-EF, modified for this project with RGBW technology and wirelessly controllable DMX technology.

With its expansive green spaces, drinking fountains, the salty air of the Gradierpavillon, the Wandelhalle venue and the music pavilion, the spa park is a central attraction of the traditional spa and health resort of Bad Mergentheim. However, the lighting in the park had become very outdated and in need of a major refurbishment. “The new lighting concept was designed to save energy and prevent unnecessary light being emitted into the sky to protect the wildlife here in the park,” explains Julia Krupka, marketing manager at the spa: “Safety and comfort for people were just as important to us.” The clients also wanted flexible lighting with variable colours for the numerous events that take place in the park and its buildings.

WE-EF was able to meet these complex demands with the CFT540 as the basic luminaire. For this project, the pole-top luminaires were modified with RGBW LEDs and an integrated DMX power supply unit that can be controlled via WLAN. The outdoor luminaire is simple to program and adjust individually, depending on the occasion. It is shielded at the top and does not emit any light into the night sky. This also complies with the provisions of the newly amended Federal Nature Conservation Act.

The pole-top luminaire with symmetrical light distribution has a clear design and its ring-shaped luminaire head is particularly flat with a height of just 5.4 cm. The LED board with OLC® lens technology produces homogeneous light distribution with high visual comfort. For optimised efficiency, the luminaires feature an RFC® Reflection Free Contour cover made of UV-stabilised clear plastic. The new pole-top luminaires have been installed section by section since 2021, and 110 of a total of 150 luminaires have now been fitted. The project will be completed by the summer of 2023.

The lighting is switched on at dusk. In normal operation, and the colour temperature is set to a pleasant warm white 3000 K, further enhancing the ambience for visitors. The lighting stays on overnight as the park is regularly used until late at night. It provides orientation and makes people feel safe at all times. The lighting is currently dimmed down to 50% after 10 pm. In view of the current situation, the operators are considering further energy-saving measures such as only switching on every second luminaire late in the evening or further reducing the illuminance at certain times. Furthermore, together with the adjacent residential palace and the town authorities, the spa management has decided not to use coloured Christmas lights this year.

Even late at night, passers-by can easily find their way around, which provides a feeling of safety. The illumination of the buildings, such as the Temple of the Fountain, remains balanced without too strong contrasts.
The four-metre high luminaires are shielded to avoid upward spill, and only direct the light where it is needed.
With a diameter of 70 cm and a height of only 5.4 cm, the CFT540 post-top luminaire appears very refined in its design. This compact design however accommodates a lot of technology.
At the moment, the luminaires are programmed to be switched down to 50% after 10 pm. The spa administration programmes this itself and adapts it flexibly depending on the season, event and also current regulations.
