BETWEEN THE CLIFF AND WAVES OF THE NORTH SEA

Beach stairs, promenade and multifunctional area in Wenningstedt on Sylt

By taking just 66 steps the new beach stairs in Wenningstedt on Sylt, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, connect the top of the cliff with the beach. Furthermore, the impressive 40 m-long and 10 m-wide wooden construction on steel girders integrates numerous platforms – a total of 400 m² invite visitors to sit and enjoy the view of the sea.

In the evenings, luminaires from WE-EF ensure good visibility and surefootedness on the stairs. RFL530-SE LED street and area lighting luminaires with connected wattage of 24 W have been installed. With regard to light distribution, [R65] lenses with asymmetric ‘forward throw’ wide beam were chosen. The system can be operated at four different dimming levels. The setting is made on one luminaire and is then transferred to the other RFL530-SE in a master/slave operation. The system usually operates with 30 per cent or 50 per cent of the maximum luminous flux. The illuminance can be increased, for example when the stairs are used as a stand for events on the beach.

RFL530-SE LED street and area lighting luminaires also illuminate the promenade and a multifunctional area for sport and games near the beach stairs. Thanks to the wide variety of lens systems that WE-EF offers for the pole luminaires, it was possible to fulfil the different light distribution requirements with a uniform luminaire design. In the small arena, some of the RFL530 luminaires are fitted with [A60] lenses while others feature [S65] lenses. Along the promenade all luminaires have [S65] lenses.

However, not only the quality of light and the design, but also the durability of the poles and luminaire housings have played a decisive role in this project. As this is a coastal location the luminaires are exposed to salty air and high humidity. Despite these adverse conditions, the 5CE corrosion protection system enables a long service life for the WE-EF poles and luminaires.
