Stadthalle Reutlingen, Germany

CULTURAL CENTRE AT THE GATEWAY TO THE SWABIAN ALB

The new Stadthalle building forms the heart of the centre of Reutlingen. Opened officially in January 2013, it presents striking architecture and an impressive architectural bronze metal facade. Two halls of varying sizes, meeting rooms, multifunctional foyers and kitchen facilities enable the organization of a diverse programme of activities that, in the first year alone, attracted some 190,000 visitors to the popular concert and event halls.

The architecture divides the building into upper and lower chambers. The lower chamber was designed to complement the height of the city’s surrounding buildings. The smaller upper chamber crowns the building and includes a ‘city balcony’ terrace. The glass structure of the upper chamber creates a symbolic classic temple motif, emphasising its function as a cultural centre. Furthermore, the ‘city balcony’ creates a link to Reutlingen’s old city centre and provides a viewpoint across all corners of the city.

At dusk and into the evening, the clear glass structure is suffused with artistic light that can be seen at great distances around the building. WE-EF ETC130 LED gimbal inground luminaires were installed to emphasise the Stadthalle facade. The gimbal insert, mounted around two axes, enables precision-direction of the light. The LED’s 3000 K colour temperature is designed to match the warm bronze tone of the facade. An optical accessory linear spread lens is used to widen the angle of the beam on one plane, ensuring that the pilaster strips are illuminated. This provides the facade with both depth and vivid highlighting effects.
